Body Image Disorder Affecting Men
Body Image Disorder or BDD is an affliction that has for a long time thought to be limited to the male of the species.
Well there is new research that suggests that men are more likely to seek treatment for this disorder than women.
The research also suggests that there are far more people afflicted with BDD than originally believed.
According to a recent study, one in every fifty people is known to suffer or have suffered from BDD at one point in their life. These numbers are staggering and a certain cause for concern among the medical community.
Of course many people believe that when the public's view of beauty and class changes the number increases. The perception of the public is constantly changing and that means that people are going to see flaws, real or perceived, in themselves to a much higher degree.
Body Image Disorder is a condition that can be very serious. In most cases the victim sees themselves as less than perfect with massive flaws to one or many parts of their body.
This perception is often tainted and may stem from an early trauma, perhaps as early as pre-teen. The image the person portrays upon themselves is often times misguided. The problem can be clearly seen in women who have eating problems.
While they are not overweight at all, sometimes very thin to be exact, their own eyes see them as someone grossly overweight. This causes severe depression and the desire to take drastic measures to improve the look they have. With BDD in men there is a similar misguided view and most often it is pointed at the genitals and hair area.
